3pm Saturday 8 August 2015 – Kiama, New South Wales 18 degrees. What a day, the scene is set!
Guests were invited to a Housewarming for Stephen and Jo, a fair mob turned up too, about 60 people to see their wonderful home on the picturesque seaside town of Kiama – the happy couple nervously showing people through their new home as a proud couple do.
Little did the guests know that Stephen and Jo had dropped into my office and told me ‘Maaate, we’re having a housewarming……but we wanna get married’.
Just quietly, COOLEST IDEA EVER! It was game on from there.
But, how is this possible? Easy. All a couple must do is present necessary paperwork to me with names of their two witnesses over 18, at least one calender month prior to their wedding. The rest, I can do easily.
‘Our mums are gunna freak’ they both said, in fact Jo’s words were ‘my mother will shit herself’.
Guests arrived between 2pm and 3pm, it was a great surprise to all, except for 5 people, Stephen and Jo, Rebecca and Tim – the witnesses and myself. So when I announced that Stephen wanted to thank people for coming and he had changed from jeans and tee into a very dapper outfit, something didn’t fit – BUT GUESTS STILL HADN’T TWIGGED.
As Steve nervously thanked people – stalling for Jo to also get frocked up – he said ‘So I suppose it’s too late now, you know what we’re here for’? The reply was priceless ‘NO! What’? That’s when I stuck my big head in and made the announcement that the housewarming would double as a wedding! The mothers were gobsmacked and so excited, I’m sure Stephen wont forget the looks on their faces for a long time – it was magic!
The ceremony itself was beautiful, the backyard was set perfectly with love hearts and lights through the trees, a small signing table that Stephen and Jo bought for the day was set down in the backyard like it had always meant to be there – that table will now be a loving centrepiece and reminder of the vows they took for each other on Saturday – in their new home.
Some celebrants will help sway couples into a ‘set’ of vows, I love however letting couples write their own vows – actually I encourage it!
What words am I going to write that reflects the love that YOU have for the person YOU are going to marry. They’ll kill for me for this……
Here’s just a snippet of Stephens vows;
Jo, on this day, I stand in front of our children, our family and friends and pledge to stay by your side in sickness and in health, in joy and in sadness, as well as through the good times and the bad.
I promise to be honest and to communicate my needs and feelings, just as I promise to listen to yours.
I promise to always look my dapper best so I fit into your fashion heights and make you proud of your precious hunk of a man.
I promise to be the best role model, friend and mentor…
But Jo’s vows were equally gorgeous;
I promise to accept you the way you are as I fell in love with you for the qualities, abilities, and outlook on life that you have, and I won’t try and reshape the man you are, that is unless you ever wear Kmart shoes again
I promise to always be open and honest with you and to share my thoughts, fears, feelings, secrets, hopes and dreams, basically I promise you the good, the bad and the ugly, but I definitely do not promise to share my chocolate with you
I promise I will help you when you need it and step aside when you don’t – except when a measuring tape is involved
I promise I’ll always unfailingly share and support your hopes, dreams and goals
I promise every night before we go to sleep to tell you that I love you, wish you sweet dreams and kiss you goodnight even if I’m upset, cranky or hormonal
How on earth would I ever write vows for their loving life partner as well as they did themselves, just magnificent! This is why I enjoy my job……LOVE is an amazing thing.
